Loss of Innocence

Her eyes are closed, unseeing
The once present smile
no longer lights her face.
Graceful hands rest
loosely on her womb
— as I grasp one
the soft texture
burns into my memory
No expression corrupts
the peaceful serenity
of her appearance.
She is calm, at rest
Tears fill my eyes
as I say I Love You —
knowing it can never
be expressed
in this way again.
Does she hear me?
Can she understand?
A cold realization
grips my heart and soul
as the casket closes
Good-bye Mom
I’ll miss you.
